What makes a Chartered Marketer?

More than just a title, the Chartered Institute of Marketing refers to Chartered status as ‘the definitive mark of the professional certified marketer’. So what does it take to become a Chartered Marketer?

Membership to the Chartered Institute of Marketing requires certain qualifications and/or sufficient years of experience in the marketing industry at a certain level of seniority. Once a marketer feels they have met these requirements they can apply to become a CIM member and await approval from the Institute. Our founder Mark was accepted for CIM membership in February 2022.

The CIM describes Chartered Marketer status as ‘the mark of an up-to-date, experienced and qualified marketing professional’. In order to achieve this the pathway to chartered status requires two continuous years of Continued Professional Development, or CPD. Many activities qualify towards these CPD credits and for our founder Mark this was attending and speaking at industry events, giving presentations, taking learning courses, contributing articles and making social media contributions. Each of the two years has a minimum number of credits that must be achieved to progress along the pathway, and Mark completed the 2022/23 and 2023/24 CPD years.

Once the two continuous years of CPD have been completed and the submission for the second year has been sent, assessed and approved, then the Chartered Marketer Online Assessment is made available. This is a series of questions based around the CIM’s Global Professional Marketing Framework and 8 core capabilities, including Customer Experience, Brand & Reputation and Marketing Communications. A minimum score is required to pass the test and each applicant has a maximum of five opportunities. Mark took his assessment in June 2024, passing first time at a score of 82% to be awarded Chartered Marketer status.

As well as using the designation of Chartered Marketer, the letters CMktr and having access to the Chartered Marketer logo, Mark was also added to the CIM Chartered Marketer Directory as a result of achieving Chartered Marketer status. This allows clients and partners to verify Mark’s status by searching his name at https://www.cim.co.uk/resources/chartered-marketer-directory, and shows Mark as one of the 509 chartered marketers in the whole south east region of the UK.

All Chartered Marketers are required to submit CPD records every year to retain their status, risking losing their designation if they fail to do so. The same activities and credit limits apply and the CIM review samples of these submissions every year to verify relevance and completion. Mark continues to expand his knowledge and keep up-to-date on the latest from the marketing industry as part of his ongoing CPD and the continuation of his Chartered Marketer journey.
